Protect yourself at all-times

It seems the best things in life happen when you don’t expect them to. Sadly, the same can be said for unfortunate events. Some of the NFL’s biggest hits happen when a player is “blindsided”; if you can’t see it coming, you can’t properly brace yourself for impact.

The Shredder’s right hand man, Master Tatsu taught us a valuable lesson in the first Ninja Turtle movie; never take your eyes off an opponent. During a training session, he front kicked a bowing student sending him crashing to the floor.

Floyd Mayweather also provided us with a similar lesson; protect yourself at all times. In his bout with Victor Ortiz, Floyd earned a knockout victory due to his opponent’s shifted focus. Ortiz’s eyes were fixated on referee Joe Cortez following a point deduction. Realizing the clock was ticking, Floyd capitalized with a two punch combination that sent Ortiz down the canvas earning him a controversial victory.

In the clip below, we see two taekwondo competitors attack one another at range before engaging in a clinch

The referee separates the two and immediately calls for action. Our blue chested competitor is eager to continue and appears as if he’s ready to launch strikes. Our red chested competitor on the other hand, decides to regroup by walking around in a small circle. Had Mr. Red kept his focus, he would have realized the referee called for action upon separation. His split second reset was truly an error of epic proportions. Because he didn’t see the kick coming, he endured a vicious knockout & brain trauma. Hopefully his pain and possible memory loss can reinforce fundamental fight advice: never take your eyes off of your opponent & protect yourself at all times.
