The Nepali Congress (NC) on Friday held its electoral constituency conventions across the country to elect representatives for the party’s upcoming general convention scheduled to be held in Kathmandu on March 3-6.

In 18 districts, which have one electoral constituency each, conventions were held at the district committee level to elect general convention representatives.Conventions were held peacefully across the country save some districts in the Tarai-Madhesi region due to “some disturbances”, according to the party. Disputes in some electoral constituencies also led to postponement of conventions in some parts.

In Saptari, constituency conventions were postponed due to disagreement. Similarly, intra-party disputes had surfaced in Siraha district where conventions are yet to take place in some villages and municipalities. NC Siraha Chapter President Sita Devi Yadav said the party has failed to hold local conventions due to disputes between rival factions. Rival factions are in disagreement in Rautahat district as well.

Constituency conventions are the second most important phase in the run-up to party’s general convention as representatives elected at this level will vote to choose new leadership, including the party president, office bearers and the Central Working Committee (CWC).

Twelve general convention representatives will be elected from each electoral constituency. There will be representatives from party’s sister wings as well. Approximately 3,200 representatives will vote during the general convention. According to an NC leader, by Saturday, it will be clear “which
